From the North of England (egg jarping) to the South of Italy (scuccetta), egg tapping involves battling hard-boiled eggs against each other until a winner, the holder of the last intact egg, is found.

We wanted to celebrate the tactility and imperfection of a cracked egg by performing a digital kintsugi, or golden joinery.

Having hand-moulded and painted our eggs from clay, we tapped (with some force) and then scanned the eggs using Maxom Moves.

Inside C4D we repaired our broken eggs and mended the cracks with virtual gold before turning them into AR sculptures to explore.

Moves by Maxon

Maxon Moves allows you to re-create individual objects in 3D by taking 2D photos from every angle (we took 60+ for each egg) and then importing them into C4D to be auto-processed, which creates both the geometry and materials. Because of the amount of control you have over quality and quantity of your source images, the resulting texture map is far superior to anything we created using LiDAR scanning.

Cinema 4D

While Maxon Moves app can capture photos of your object (as well as face tracking and motion capture for future reference), the actual processing is done in C4D on your computer. This is particularly good when working on commercial projects where cloud or open source processing platforms would cause concern. To create the kintsugi effect, we used the built-in sculpting tools to build and smooth layers of material until the desired effect was created.

Vectary

FBX files were created of each egg, then imported into Vectary to host the experience. Having the egg and the gold fix as separate elements inside the FBX files allowed us to add interactivity within Vectary.

Unfortunately, this feature doesn't apply inside AR experience through this platform.
